The events in the film take place in 1921. A young Ybray Abdrakhmanov comes to the distressed storyteller Sagynbai on behalf of the Soviet government to record on paper his version of the Manas. He comes for a few months, but because of the endless lines pouring from the mouth of the great manaschi Sagynbai Orozbakov, he stays with him for five years.
